Look, I don’t even have a problem with the idea of reincarnation in general. There is nothing demeaning about believing that we keep coming back. But when your randomly assigned lot in life is interpreted as a sentence passed down as punishment for previous behavior, I have a fucking problem with that.

“I have no culture. I’m like, vaguely European.”

As far as I was concerned, and as far as I understood culture, I had none. Culture to me was Black churches and Mexican food and the Italian family in Moonstruck, who yelled and drank together and played opera and plinked sugar cubes in their champagne flutes.
